Shannon Maggie explores the theme of performance and identity, illustrating differing perspectives on her physical appearance. The artist bids to communicate both the multiplicity of her identity as well as personal conflicts regarding her appearance.

Objectification theory informs Maggie’s perception of her body as a commodity, one that can perform sufficiently for any given scenario. The objectification Theory states that sexual objectification penetrates women’s and girls’ self-esteem, causing them “to treat themselves as objects” to evaluate. Shannon Maggie confronts her self-objectification through her portraiture.

The project aims to convey the internal dispute she participates in constructing performances of her identity.
